What is a Registered Agent?

A registered agent serves many vital functions. If you are not residing in the state where your entity is formed, it is your obligation to meet the legal requirements for a staffed location (including regular, consistent business hours). The staffed location is necessary for many functions, but especially to receive "legal process," if it should be served to you.  In addition, a registered agent service can also notify you of important deadlines so that you can remain compliant. To be official, a registered agent must have a physical address (not simply a PO Box).

If you are doing business in a state other than your state of incorporation, a registered agent is required.
